A bell tower in the middle of a lake and a strenuous endurance test involving rowing around it for twenty-four hours using arm power only. This is “Curon”, a performance carried out by the artist Sven Sachsalber (b. 1987, Silandro, BZ), in 2012, on the Reschensee, an artificial lake in the South Tyrol. The video made of this arduous enterprise is part of the Museion collection and is currently on display at the Cubo Garutti – Piccolo Museion in Bolzano as part of the European project “Art Works! European Culture of Resistance and Liberation”. The project was specifically created to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and features a series of workshops with a group of young people and three exhibitions at the Cubo Garutti. The artworks displayed at the Cubo reflect on the theme of resistance, especially contemporary acts of resistance made through art.
The works were selected together with the artist Alessandra Ferrini, who has been invited by Museion to help a group of young people reflect on the themes presented in the project. In the case of the video of the artist Sven Sachsalber, this act of rowing repeatedly around the bell tower in a wooden coffin transformed into a canoe, is both a test of physical endurance, and a tribute to this symbol of the history of Curon and its act of resistance/existence.
