Urban Credibility: The need for recognition
Curated and moderated by: Brita Köhler
A dialogue round with stakeholders in South Tyrolean youth work; in the context of the exhibition Graffiti
The current exhibition Graffiti at Museion explores the relationship between urban youth culture - graffiti writing - and forms of artistic expression: from early examples of ‘spray paintings’ from the 1950s onwards, to works by graffiti writers and international artists who have incorporated graffiti into their art.
Graffiti stretches through the city in bold colours and loudly. It is a visible expression of public opinion. And so it is no surprise that the exhibition also deals with forms of resistance and gentle activism. Wait a minute - ‘activism’? Yes - yes - but as a non-violent rebellion and social force as well as the key to democracy and equality, with which young people say NO and share their alternative ideas with others!
What is the nature of young people’s rebellion today? Through which channels and in what form do they express their need for recognition and authenticity? And what are the (urban) places and displays through which they express themselves? We will discuss these questions with active players in South Tyrolean youth work and urban (youth) culture.
