Museion is pleased to present a major exhibition dedicated to Franco Vaccari (Modena, 1936-2025), one of the most distinctive voices of postwar and conceptual Italian art. Bringing together photographic works, videos, artist’s books, and archival materials, the exhibition presents, for the first time, a comprehensive exploration of Vaccari’s environments as the core of his artistic practice. Conceived on the occasion of what would have been the artist’s 90th birthday, the exhibition marks the first extensive institutional presentation of his work in Italy in over a decade and situates it within a broader international discourse on audience participation, foregrounding the active role of visitors in shaping the artwork itself.
Trained as a physicist before turning to art in the late 1960s, Franco Vaccari developed a practice that consistently challenged the idea of the artwork as a fixed object. Rather than producing autonomous works, he conceived his projects as real-time exhibitions (Esposizioni in tempo reale), in which the work unfolds over time and is shaped by the presence and actions of its viewers. This approach runs through more than fifty years of artistic production, bringing together works across different media—from photography and film to sound, video, and early internet-based projects. For Vaccari, technology plays a central role in shaping how reality is perceived, remembered, and shared.
In his influential essay Fotografia e inconscio tecnologico (Photography and the Technological Unconscious) (1979), Vaccari described this artistic strategy as “occultamento dell’autore” (“disappearance of the author”). Instead of presenting a finished form, he creates conditions in which meaning emerges through interaction, chance, and collective presence. The viewer is therefore not a passive observer but an essential component of the work itself. This principle finds its most complete expression in Vaccari’s environments: often temporary architectures that transform exhibition spaces into places of experience. Built without specific design or architectural intent but often inspired by everyday or salvaged materials, Vaccaris works remain open to unpredictability, privileging what happens within them over their physical structure.
The exhibition is organized thematically and unfolds through a sequence of environments and other works that explore key aspects of Vaccari’s practice. Themes such as the traces people leave behind, the collective unconscious, and the formation of memories guide both the reading of the works and the exhibition design, which has been entrusted to Fosbury Architecture.
The exhibition opens with projects focused on darkness as a way of approaching the unconscious and the dream world, inviting visitors into an inner “descent,” both metaphorical and literal. In this subdued setting, perception slows and familiar ways of seeing give way to a more attentive, sensory experience. Environments such as La Scultura Buia (1968), Esposizione in tempo reale n. 19, Codemondo (1980), and Esposizione in tempo reale n. 20, Ambiente grigio multiuso, scatola per sondare lo spazio vicino e lontano (1987) create situations in which personal experience becomes part of a shared space.
The exhibition continues through environments that address Vaccari’s interest in the traces of human presence in urban public spaces and in the social dynamics of temporary communities. Together with the iconic project Esposizione in tempo reale n. 4, Lascia su queste pareti una traccia fotografica del tuo passaggio, presented at the Venice Biennale in 1972, and its development, Photomatic d’Italia (1972–75), an ambitious project developed through photobooths in public spaces across Italy, Esposizione in tempo reale n. 21, Bar Code – Code Bar (1993), and Mini cinema (2003) explore social interaction, collective behavior, and moments of spontaneous encounter. Throughout the exhibition, Vaccari’s environments are presented not as static reconstructions but as reactivated situations, faithful to the artist’s original intentions and responsive to contemporary audiences.
Museion’s collection includes around twenty works by Franco Vaccari, most of them part of the Archivio di Nuova Scrittura donated to the museum in 2020. This nucleus includes some of the early verbo-visual works that mark Vaccari’s beginnings as a visual poet and already point to his sustained interest in language, traces, and human presence. The inclusion of some of these works in the exhibition underscores the continuity between his early research and the museum’s own heritage.
Franco Vaccari
Franco Vaccari was born in Modena on June 18, 1936, and received a scientific education, graduating in physics. After beginning his artistic career as a visual poet, he initiated his first Esposizione in tempo reale in 1969, introducing the concept of the “real-time exhibition” that would become central to his practice. His work spans several approaches but is often described through the lens of conceptual realism. Among his most renowned works is Esposizione in tempo reale n. 4, Lascia su queste pareti una traccia fotografica del tuo passaggio, presented in a solo room inside the Central Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1972; he returned with solo rooms in 1980 and 1993.
Alongside his artistic production, Vaccari developed an influential theoretical practice, publishing key texts such as Duchamp e l’occultamento del lavoro (1978) and Fotografia e inconscio tecnologico (1979). His work has been presented internationally in major exhibitions and institutions, including the Gwangju Biennale in South Korea, Kunsthalle Basel, Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, Mostyn in Wales, Fondazione Morra Greco in Naples, and the Milan Triennale, among others. Franco Vaccari died in 2025.
Collateral program

17:00–19:00
Museion Ink in collaboration with Teatro Stabile Bolzano
Creative writing encounters: During the Museion Ink workshop, the works of Franco Vaccari will stimulate participants to engage in performative acts and processes of automatic and personal writing. For this special occasion, the actions will be guided by the Teatro Stabile Bolzano to bring out the practice of “real time,” a common designation of the artist’s works, which are in fact realized in the very moment of the action. Participants will be free to act within simple situations offered by the Vaccarian environments, where chance and play will be the protagonists.

20:30
Sound performance by Francesco Fonassi and Luisali Theisen within the environment Sogni n.1 by Franco Vaccari
The concert, conceived on magnetic tape specifically for Vaccari’s work, creates a dialogue between the practices of the two artists through the “exhibition in real time” reproduced in the exhibition. At the end of the concert, and by prior reservation, it will be possible to sleep in the space and, the following day, recount one’s dreams, thereby reactivating Vaccari’s work.

Story encounters
“Events in Real Time”: Franco Vaccari was convinced that art is active only when we bring it to life ourselves and experience it directly. Why did he think so? Because everyday life and our being together are also shaped by the traces we leave in different situations – alone and in interaction with others. During the gathering, we experience the artist’s interactive settings – environments – and explore the connections that emerge from them.
