Evelyn Taocheng Wang. Sweet Landscape
This spring, Museion opens Sweet Landscape, the first institutional solo exhibition in Italy by Evelyn Taocheng Wang (*1981, Chengdu). Working at the intersection of painting, writing, installation, performance, video, and fashion design, the Netherlands-based artist has developed a distinctive visual language that combines references to Eastern and Western art history, fragments of personal memory, and a fluid understanding of identity.
For her exhibition in Bolzano, Wang is creating an artistic scenography featuring numerous new pieces that build on her previous body of work and establish a dialogue with the hybrid cultural environment. Inspired by the local fruit market, mountain landscapes, and medieval frescoes depicting daily life, festivities, and femininity, the artist draws on Bolzano’s visual vernacular in a suite of new paintings on silk and canvas. Garments from her wardrobe also become image carriers. Rich in metaphors, wordplay, costumes, and calligraphy, Wang’s work combines visual poetry, subtle humor, and critical depth.
