Mapping out an Artistic Practice: A Research project by Museion
Som Supaparinya
Mo num en ts
In mid-May, Museion will open Mo num en ts, a new exhibition by Som Supaparinya (b. 1973, Chiang Mai), presented in collaboration with the Han Nefkens Foundation – Southeast Asian Video Art Production Grant 2024.
Supaparinya is the recipient of the 2024 edition of the grant, established in memory of Vietnamese artist Dinh Q. Lê, which supports video artists from Southeast Asia in expanding their practice internationally. Selected from a shortlist of eight artists, she was recognized for her rigorous research-based approach and her ability to intertwine documentary and experimental forms to address urgent socio-political issues.
Mo num en ts explores the entanglement of environmental degradation in Southeast Asia with Cold War ideologies and state-driven narratives of development. Drawing on archival materials and contemporary research, Supaparinya traces how competing political visions have shaped perceptions of progress and national identity, revealing ecological destruction as both a material and symbolic legacy.
The work will be presented at several international institutions, including Sàn Art (Vietnam), Jim Thompson Art Center (Thailand), Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art (Japan), Kunsthal Charlottenborg (Denmark), and Rockbund Art Museum (China). It will also enter the Museion Collection, reaffirming the museum’s ongoing commitment to video art.
