Museion’s 2016 programme opens with an exceptional double exhibition. Francesco Vezzoli is curating an exhibition on the Museion collection as guest curator, and presenting, as an artist, the first retrospective of his sculptural work.

The artist will be present.

Entitled Museo Museion, the double show is set to take over the whole of the Bolzano venue. It opens with an imposing wallpaper based on a painting by Giovanni Paolo Pannini, which immerses the ground floor of Museion in the atmosphere of an eighteenth-century picture gallery.

Short-circuiting the history of art, he reinterprets part of the Museion collection by making it interface with masterpieces from Western art history kept in major European and American museums.

Francesco Vezzoli (Brescia, 1971) studied at Central St. Martin’s School of Art in London. His work has been shown in numerous solo exhibitions in public and private institutions, most recently: Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2009–2010); Jeu de Paume, Paris (2009); Kunsthalle Wien (2009); Garage Center for Contemporary Culture, Moscow (2010); MAXXI, Rome (2013), MoCA, Los Angeles (2014), and MoMA PS1, New York (2014). Notable performances include: “Right You Are (If You Think You Are)” at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2007) and “Ballets Russes Italian Style (The Shortest Musical You Will Never See Again)”, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2009) with the participation of Lady Gaga and Frank Gehry.
His work has been selected three times to represent Italy at the Venice Biennale (2001, 2005 and 2007). He has taken part in events such as the Istanbul Biennial (1999), the Liverpool Biennial (2002), Bienal de Sao Paulo (2004), the Prague Biennale (2005), the Whitney Biennial (2006), the Shanghai Biennial (2006) and the Taipei Biennial (2006). His most recent projects include “Prima Donna, A Symphonic Concert with Visual” with Rufus Wainwright, with the participation of Cindy Sherman, presented in Athens in 2015, and the performance “Fortuna Desperata”, which opened the Performa 15 biennial in New York (2015).
