International symposium

An international symposium to investigate the present and future of small contemporary arts organisations.

On 11 and 12 April 2019, the university campus in Bolzano will host ‘Negotiating the Transcultural Museum’, a collaboration between the Faculty of Design and Art of the Free University of Bolzano and Museion, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Bolzano.

In recent times, the understanding of the museum has fundamentally changed. Instead of being perceived as a container of artworks and objects to collect and care for, the museum is today considered a place for shared and continuous cultural production. The symposium ‘Negotiating the Transcultural Museum’ will bring together different perspectives from theorists and practitioners. The aim is to find answers to the questions emerging in the negotiation between the collective and co-operative character of museums’ cultural production, between the local context where they are located and operate, and the global and transcultural dimension of contemporary artistic and curatorial practices.

The symposium is organised by the Dean of the Faculty of Design and Art, Prof. Dr Stephan Schmidt-Wulffen and the Director of Museion, Letizia Ragaglia. Some of the most innovative international curators and theoreticians will partecipate, namely: Catherine David (Centre Pompidou, Paris), Emanuele Guidi (AR/GE Kunst, Bolzano), Marco Scotini (NABA/FM Center for Contemporary Art, Milan), Christian Kravagna (Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna), Carol Yinghua Lu (Independent curator, Beijing) and Tereza Stejskalová (Tranzit, Prague). Five young academics will take part in the programme: Dr Cristina Bastante (IED - Istituto Europeo di Design, Rome, Dr Ana Bilbao (University of the Arts, London), Dr Ana Sol Gonzales Rueda (University of St Andrews, St Andrews), Dr Jana Haeckel (Goethe Institute, Brussels), and Jennifer Warren (University of the Arts, London).

The symposium will be in English and will take place at the Faculty of Design and Art of the Free University of Bolzano. The event has been devised for experts in the field of contemporary arts, curatorial and museum studies, but is open to university students and to the wider public. It is free of charge and booking is not required.

On Thursday 11 April, at 6pm, Museion – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Bolzano will host the keynote presentation by Professor Christian Kravagna. Prof Kravagna, author of ‘Transmoderne. Eine Kunstgeschichte des Kontakts’ (2017), teaches Postcolonial Studies at the Fine Art Academy of Vienna. His talk, titled ‘Just what is it that makes our museums transcultural?’ will sketch the essential issues to be considered in the relationships between museums and in the transformations of contemporary society. More information on the symposium can be found in the programme below.

‘Negotiating the Transcultural Museum’ is organised by the Free University of Bolzano and Museion – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Bolzano and thanks to the generous support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio, Bolzano and the Fondazione Antonio Dalle Nogare.
