CONTEMPORARY DANCE WORKSHOP with Giulia Tornarolli. An introduction to the individual exploration of movement in space and in relation to other bodies.

Museion Art Club presents a free contemporary dance workshop in collaboration with Giulia Tornarolli, a dancer born in Bolzano, who studied and graduated at the SEAD (Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance) and has already worked on numerous international projects. In the workshop, the participants will join Giulia in first exploring individual movement through awareness of their own bodies, and then applying what they have learnt to meeting and interacting with other bodies. The workshop will end with a public demonstration event on December 16 at 7 pm.

CONTEMPORARY DANCE WORKSHOP with Giulia Tornarolli

15+16.12.2023, 13:30–17:30

GET TOGETHER with music by Coobolt

16.12.2023, 19:00

In the workshop led by Giulia Tornarolli, the participants - even if it is their first dance experience - will be able to approach contemporary dance and acquire the basics over the two days.

The first day will be divided into three moments: “My body and me”, “My body in space” and “My body meets other bodies”. “My body and me” will consist of an individual exploration of movement through the study of the concept of weight, axis, center of gravity, spiraling movement and an introduction to the “7 Levels of Tension” inspired by the Lecoq method for investigating the correlation between emotional states and body textures. “My body in space” will focus on movement dynamics, and the exploration and study of pedestrian movements, like walking and running as a foundation for moving in and relating to space. “My body meets other bodies” will introduce certain basic elements of contact improvisation, such as eye contact, listening, weight sharing, counterweight, manipulation and leading-following.

The second day will focus on interaction between bodies, picking up on elements of contact improvisation and introducing “couple dancing” as a tool for interaction to be used in guided improvisation sessions. This will be followed by space management and group listening with an exploration of the relationship between the group and the individual. Finally, the ideas and concepts experienced through the instant composition sessions will be re-explored. In the public demonstration event on December 16 at 7 pm, Giulia Tornarolli will talk about her discipline and research by performing exercises herself together with the participants from the workshop and also inviting the audience to participate. The event will be accompanied by the music of Coobot.

Giulia Tornarolli was born in 1992 in Bolzano, Italy, where she began taking dance lessons at Elisa Darù’s dance school. Throughout her childhood and adolescence, she remained passionate about dance and other artistic disciplines and sports such as judo, volleyball, and athletics. After graduating from High School in 2011, Giulia moved to Leeds (United Kingdom) to join the Foundation Course at the NSCD (Northern School of Contemporary Dance). During the summer of 2013, she took part in the Geographie installation project under the direction of Annie Vigier and Franc Apertet (Les Gens d’Uterpan) at the Transart Festival. In the same year, she was invited to enroll in the Undergraduate Program at the SEAD (Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance) where she had the opportunity to study and collaborate with many international dance personalities, such as Edivaldo Ernesto, Milla Koistinen, Paul Blackman, Konstandina Efthimiadou, Martin Kilvady, Jordan De Champs, Manuel Ronda, Francisco Cordova, Sita Ostheimer, Janyce Michellod, Libbi Farr and many others. In 2015 she presented a solo performance “Ludico II” for the Bolzano Danza festival, and in 2016 she was part of the “All these Places Have Their Moments” quartet directed by Patricia Hastewell, which led to the “La Otra Familia” collective of which she is a co-founder and current collaborator.
