The artist, composer and writer Gerhard Rühm dedicates a special evening to the figure of Peter Mitterhofer, inventor of the typewriter. The meeting is part of a collaboration between Museion and the Parcines Museum.

Rühm presents his new book poeticik der schreibmaschine. hommage à peter mitterhofer and make a performance with Monika Lichtenfeld etude zum malenenschreiben. Overlaying historical sources, visual poetry and sound performance, Rühm retraces the different stages of Peter Mitterhofer’s adventurous life. From his birth in Partschins to his work as a carpenter, from his evenings as a ventriloquist and entertainer in taverns to the invention of musical instruments and therefore of the different models of typewriter: at each stage of Mitterhofer’s life, Rühm associates his own comments on experimental poetry, rigorously typed. Rühm is in fact one of the first artists to discover, at the beginning of the 1950s, the poetic potential of the typewriter.

Four meetings in which male and female artists talk about each other live, in dialogue or through performances: the artiparlando 2019 conference cycle will also see high-level guests, male and female protagonists of the 1950s, 60s and 70s. In addition to Gerhard Rühm, Tomaso Binga (30 May), Berty Skuber (17 October) and Eugen Gomringer (30 January 2020). The common thread of the meetings is visual poetry, a theme that runs through various Museion exhibitions and projects in 2019, including in collaboration.

Gerhard Rühm (1930, Vienna) is considered among the classics of modern Austrian literature. Rühm studied piano and composition at the Staatsakademie in Vienna; among the founders of the well-known group of writers “Wiener Gruppe”, since the 1950s he has produced works - sound poems, texts, visual poetry, photomontages and publication projects - which are located at the crossroads between image and music, written and spoken language.
