What poetics do we need to survive in a world where being homeless is the dimension that unites us?

Throughout the month of November Museion will present three events under the title Longing for Belonging. Curated by Museion Art Club, Longing for Belonging investigates the concept of belonging in an age of growing uncertainty – whether in terms of body, memory, place or community. In the form of performances, installations, films, stories, and music the project grants special attention to the notion of dwelling, a human right that is frequently taken for granted.

From the precarious cognitive class to the new poor in urban suburbs, from refugees fleeing war to digital nomads, in hypermodern times, being homeless is a condition shared by a steadily growing number of people. As the right to housing increasingly evaporates in the daily lives of these communities, global change introduces new omens of collapse that not only put more homes at risk, but also the planet as a whole. Longing for Belonging asks what poetics are needed to survive a world where homelessness is becoming a normality. Is Space meaningful at all when “belonging” itself isn’t investigated first?

In such a fragmented and uncertain context, the curators of Longing for Belonging signal a shift towards the digital metaverse as a place of refuge. Designed to be appealing and pervasive these digital means provide reassuring vortexes that mirror the tastes and needs of its users, while simultaneously pulling them into a dimension where mind and body disconnect – acknowledged by the curators as the main source of today’s feelings of fragmentation and displacement.

Longing for Belonging takes place inside a physical framework that will parasite the exhibition HOPE throughout the month of November. For this occasion the architecture collective Parasite 2.0, based in Milan and London, has designed the installation Assemblage #1 which will evolve over time.

The architectural “parasite” will create temporary spaces where three different events will be hosted. The first is scheduled for Nov. 9 with a musical performance starting at Municipio Square in Bolzano, which will be followed by the performance Curva Cieca by artist Muna Mussie at Museion. The performance will touch on themes such as identity, the past and the Italian colonial legacy; the second event, on Nov. 16, with the presentation of the short film Anatomia urbana (conception and art direction by Flavio Pintarelli, direction and cinematography by Armin Ferrari and soundtrack by Claudio Rocchetti) will delve into the dialogue on the sense of belonging, followed by a reading of some new fiction stories by author Gianluca Didino.

Finally, on Nov. 24, Museion will present the extended performance La Casa by choreographer and artist Aitana Cordero, created in collaboration with iNEST – Interconnected Northeast Innovation Ecosystem project of the Mountecos competence center of the Free University of Bozen Bolzano. During the performance, the constant action of construction and deconstruction of space, carried out with a group of people invited by the artist herself, refers to some of the problematic issues of housing specific to the Bolzano context. Aitana Cordero’s performance is realized in collaboration with SCUM record label, which will complement the event by presenting DJ sets and a live-set from noon to midnight.

On the occasion of Longing for Belonging the third fanzine accompanying this research chapter will be produced. The limited edition fanzine will be distributed free of charge during the evening of Nov. 24.
