As part of the exhibition Poetry in the box dedicated to the cultural centre Mercato del Sale and the artist Ugo Carrega, Museion presents “Nel Contesto”, a conversation between guests whose stories expand on the themes in the exhibition through interdisciplinary connections connected with the local area.

In the evening entitled ‘Visioni diffuse: dalle riviste di Ugo Carrega alla storia della fanzine in Italia’ we talk about new non-conformist forms of communication, which from the 1950s until today have characterised artistic productions based on text and image, autonomous fanzine publications, as well as activist actions in Italy and South Tyrol in the search for alternative places for free culture.

At the end of the 1950s, the magazine ‘Ana Eccetera’, published by Anna and Martino Oberto, became for artist, gallery owner and publisher Ugo Carrega the inspiration for the prototype of a magazine-container, a sort of wrapper containing, in loose form, various contributions by various cultural operators. In the years that followed, the magazine established itself in Carrega’s artistic activity and research: the latter began to collect, produce, archive and present contributions related to ‘Verbo Visuale’ art, a new form of artistic language of the time that lies between text and image. Since 1971, boxed editions have intensified, often accompanying the exhibition activities and event programming at the Mercato del Sale, a cultural centre founded by Carrega.

The Mercato del Sale and its activities will be the prelude to an exciting dialogue: in what socio-political context are new and non-conformist forms of art and communication emerging? And what special characteristics do they have and how do they reach us?

Together with our guests, we take a look at the history of fanzines in Italy, recount the activist movements of the 1970s in South Tyrol, where the former Monopoly occupied in ‘79 - the site where Museion now stands - and give voice to the call for an alternative, young culture of the South Tyrolean magazine Sturzflüge/Voli in picchiata.

In particular, during the talk, Sara Serighelli will talk about the publication edited in collaboration with Dafne Boggeri, “OUT OF THE GRID: Italian Zine 1978-2006”, an artist’s project realised thanks to the Italian Council XI Edition call for proposals. The fanzines presented in the book shed light on the subcultural movements and the world of independent publishing in the 1970s and 1980s in Italy and are set in the context of the search for an alternative and free culture in South Tyrol and the visionary activities of the Salt Market carried out by the artist Ugo Carrega.

Dominikus Andergassen, on the other hand, will talk about his memories of an era that raised its voice and wrote contemporary history through various media and cultural actions, while Mirijam Obwexer, as the youngest guest on the panel, will bring the historical call for a free and independent culture in South Tyrol into the present, through the 54th issue of the magazine Sturzfluege, which she produced and in which young creative people and culture enthusiasts of all generations are currently active.
