Spoken Word Poetry

Museion Casa Atelier

In this five-day workshop with artist Otis Mensah, in collaboration with the Faculty of Design and Arts of the University of Bozen-Bolzano, the artist will guide participants in exploring the intersections between poetry and experimental music.

This collaborative artist residency, running from Friday 16th to Tuesday 20th September as part of the Museion Art Club programme, invites a community of participants to explore possible forms of physical and linguistic expression. Otis Mensah is an artist who explores the intersection of poetry and experimental music. Taking inspiration from the rhythmic and expressive freedom of jazz, their work uses aesthetic language as a tool to address themes of identity, existence and coming of age.

On this special occasion at Museion, the artist will guide the residency participants on a personal and creative journey through the creation of collaborative, free works that use the mediums of sound, writing and the spoken word. Spanning five days, the workshop will investigate the relationships between hip-hop culture and jazz music, developing the ways in which this has shaped a formless understanding of language.

The workshop will include a series of collaborative sessions and group discussions focusing on the central themes of language as a tool for abstraction and knowledge, as well as more traditional creative writing exercises. This residency will also present a new work by Otis Mensah, which will be developed during their time at Museion, as well as a collective group artwork created by the workshop participants – both of which will then be shown during a final performance open to the public.

Thanks to the collaboration with the Faculty of Design and Arts of the University of Bozen-Bolzano, a group of students will work closely with the artist to transform the results of the residency into formats that can be enjoyed by all.

Museion Art Club is an incubator and amplifier, offering space, visibility, and networking to the local creative scene, generating independent interaction between the museum and drivers of urban change. Conceived by the Museion Art Club Forum, a group of nine young people from outside the institution who freely develop formats aimed at the public, its aim is to accelerate contemporary culture in South Tyrol.
